The Stille Type Chisel Straight is widely used in orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures, especially for cutting, shaping, and removing bone tissue. Surgeons rely on it during spinal surgeries, joint reconstructions, and craniofacial operations where precise bone work is needed. It also plays a key role in osteotomy procedures and bone grafting surgeries.

Orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and oral-maxillofacial surgeons are the primary users of this instrument in the operating room. It's also handled by surgical residents and scrub technicians who assist during complex bone procedures.

Unlike curved or angled chisels, the straight design offers a direct, linear cutting path that gives surgeons better control during bone work. Its flat, beveled edge allows clean, precise cuts without causing unnecessary trauma to surrounding tissue. The Stille-type build is also known for its balanced weight distribution, which reduces hand fatigue during longer procedures.

After each use, rinse the chisel immediately to remove bone debris and biological material, then clean it with an enzymatic detergent solution. Inspect the blade edge for any damage before placing it in an autoclave for steam sterilization at the recommended temperature and pressure. Always follow your facility's CSSD (Central Sterile Services Department) protocols to ensure full decontamination and patient safety.

With consistent maintenance, a high-quality stainless steel surgical chisel can last 10 to 20 years or even longer in a clinical setting. Regular inspection for blade dullness, surface corrosion, or micro-cracks helps extend its functional lifespan significantly. Proper storage in a protective instrument tray and avoiding misuse like prying or excessive force also keeps the tool in peak working condition.
