Tungsten carbide inserts usually last many years with proper care. Avoid excessive force, clean after every use, and store properly to maintain grip and cutting performance. They are far more durable than standard stainless steel tips.

Olsen Hegar needle holders are widely used in oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and ophthalmic procedures where precision suturing in tight spaces is needed. Gynecological and general soft tissue surgeries also rely on this instrument because it combines suturing and cutting in one step. Its built-in scissors make it especially popular in procedures where the surgeon needs to place a suture and trim the thread without switching tools.

Olsen-Hegar combines needle holding and built-in scissors, letting surgeons cut sutures without switching tools. Mayo-Hegar only holds the needle, so scissors must be used separately. This makes Olsen-Hegar faster and more efficient for suturing.

Standard needle holders grip the needle but don’t cut sutures. Olsen-Hegar adds integrated scissors and tungsten carbide inserts for a stronger, longer-lasting grip. This combination improves precision and speeds up suturing.

After each use, rinse the instrument under running water immediately to remove blood and tissue debris, then clean it using an enzymatic detergent with a soft brush, paying close attention to the serrated jaws and scissor area. Rinse thoroughly, inspect for any residue, and dry completely before packaging. Autoclave sterilization at 134°C for 3–4 minutes using a pre-vacuum cycle, or at 121°C for 15–20 minutes using a gravity cycle, is the most recommended method.
