Glenoid retractors are most commonly used in total shoulder arthroplasty, reverse shoulder replacement, and shoulder instability repairs. Surgeons also rely on them during Bankart procedures and rotator cuff surgeries where clear access to the glenoid surface is essential.

The 11 1/4" glenoid retractor is typically crafted from high-grade surgical stainless steel, which provides excellent strength, corrosion resistance, and long-term durability. Some premium versions may also feature titanium alloy construction for a lighter, equally robust alternative.

It is then sterilized using autoclave steam sterilization at 134°C for 3–4 minutes using a pre-vacuum cycle, or at 121°C for 15–20 minutes using a gravity cycle, following your facility's validated sterilization protocol.

Unlike general shoulder retractors, a glenoid retractor is specifically contoured to hook around the posterior glenoid rim, giving the surgeon precise, stable exposure of the glenoid face without damaging surrounding soft tissue. Its unique blade angle and length are designed specifically for the tight, deep anatomy of the glenohumeral joint.

One of the biggest mistakes is improper blade placement, which can cause unnecessary soft tissue trauma or nerve injury, particularly to the axillary nerve. Surgeons should also avoid applying excessive retraction force for prolonged periods, as this increases the risk of tissue ischemia and postoperative complications.
